Owing to the superior qualities of quartz and clay, Iznik is
the home of the eponymous tiles. In these photographs are shown the Yesil (Green) Mosque, one of the oldest Ottoman mosques, built in the late 14th century. It is decorated inside with Iznik tiles. We toured a workshop that produces the tiles using
authentic historical techniques. Some of these photographs show young women in
a range of clothing reflecting different degrees of covering. Notice, also,
that while engaged in this ancient art form a number of them are enjoying the
modern technology of ear buds, which are presumably connected to iPods.
